Project Description

A new KaBOOM! playground was built at COA Youth & Family Centers’ Burke Early Education Center on Thursday, July 23rd. Ten volunteers from US Bank worked tremendously hard with COA staff to complete construction of the play area in a single day. The playground “Build Day Blitz” concluded with a community celebration and cookout, where families from the neighborhood could enroll their children in the center and tour the new facilities.

“U.S. Bank is honored to help build this playground,” said Bill Bertha, president for U.S. Bank in Milwaukee. “It’s important that children have a fun and safe place to play that’s outdoors” said Bertha.

Financial and in-kind support for the playground came from the families of Hope Melamed Winter and Elmer Winter, Northwestern Mutual, Manpower Group, the Dr. Pepper Snapple Group and KaBOOM! – a national nonprofit dedicated to bringing play to kids growing up in poverty in America.

The build incorporated the professional guidance and community-build model of Lee Recreation, a family-owned playground company located in Cambridge, WI.

The Burke Early Education Center is scheduled to begin classes for fall 2015 on August 3rd. The Center has capacity to enroll 116 children ages six weeks to six years old and is an Early Head Start provider.

“COA and our partners in the Amani neighborhood are so excited to bring affordable, quality early education programming to this community,” said Thomas P. Schneider, COA’s Executive Director. W-2 assistance and scholarship support are available for qualifying families.
