1960 - 1969
Norman Adelman had assumed his duties as Executive Director of the Children's Outing Association on November 1, 1958 and the first thing on his agenda was coeducational camping. It took six years for this to become a reality because of special zoning requirements in Summit. But in the summer of 1965, 40 boys and 40 girls were enrolled for the first coed camp session.
Coeducational camping resulted in a number of positive changes, including richer dimensions to the program for boys and girls, improved policies and procedures, better trained counselors who could now be hired for a full summer, and physical improvements to the camp.
As Camp Sidney Cohen began serving more and more non-Jewish children, the Jewish Community Center began to think more seriously about providing its own camp for Jewish children. As a result, Camp Sidney Cohen became a more interracial, multicultural camp.
